When most people think of the Cairn Terrier, the first image that comes to mind is Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Released in the late 1930s, The Wizard of Oz was single-handedly responsible for shooting Judy Garland to fame for her portrayal of the main character, Dorothy. However, Judy Garland was not the only one who received fame directly from the film.
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s sidekick is a small dog named Toto, played by a Cairn Terrier named Terry. Terry’s handler, Carl Spitz, is one of Hollywood’s best-known dog trainers, an achievement due in no small part to the adorable little Cairn Terrier’s work in the film. Carl Spitz and Terry worked together in over a dozen films after The Wizard of Oz.
It is said that Judy Garland and Terry terrier had a very affectionate working relationship and developed a very strong bond throughout the filming of the film, which is most likely what led to Garland’s ownership of the Cairn Terrier afterwards. Garland’s daughter, as you know, is Liza Minelli, who is also the owner of the famous Cairn Terriers. Minelli is famous for his love and care for dogs, but the most special thing about this breed is the love he always got through his mother.
Prince Edward and his wife, Wallis Simpson, famous for their royal and time in the public eye, are also known for their ownership of Cairn Terriers. As the pets of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, their pets certainly receive the royal treatment! Edward and Simpson’s Cairn Terriers have a meal prepared by a chef specially trained to make food for dogs and served privately in the room of the Duke and Duchess out of a silver bowl, as if the dogs were royalty themselves. It is said that the dogs were even eaten by their owners!
Edward and Simpson had several Cairn Terriers over the years, the first being Slipper, a colorful gray Cairn who had so many problems with housebreaking that he was nicknamed Mister Loo. After Mr. Loo came a cream-colored female named Pookie, a gray brindle named Mister Loo named Detto, and a cream-colored female named Prisie. However, after several generations of Cairn Terrier ownership, the Duke and Duchess finally started keeping Pugs as companion animals.
The most famous Cairn Terrier breeders are Brenda and Ron Birch. After thirty years of careful and selective breeding practices, the Birches have made a name for themselves by producing champion after champion in their litter. The dogs are so popular that their bloodline has its own name: Kinkim. Many people attribute their success with the dog to the result of heavy interaction with the pair. While many breeders will hire handlers and groomers, the Birches are known for showing and training their own dogs. The most impressive Cairn Terrier, Champion Kinkim Ludvic, was awarded more than 25 certificates in various competitions. How to be a successful puppy?
