The Calm Freeze – Dog Listener Training

The Dog Listener training system is built on providing leadership to your dog. If the dog sees you as a leader, it will get rid of these tasks. In the dog’s eyes, someone must be the pack leader, the dog or you.

Freezing is a way of taking control of a situation and telling your dog that you are in control, that you are happy with the situation, and that the dog does not need to worry.

Here are a couple of examples.

I love taking my chocolate lab Maisie for a walk in the countryside. Guildford has lots of wooded areas to live in. Most of the nearby roads are quiet. Sometimes a car travels to and from nearby fields. At this point I quietly summon Maisie to my side, grab her collar by the side and pat her shoulder. I’m watching the car, not Maisie. When the car passes, Maisie continues on her way.

This is how I created the calm ice cream. I told Maisie that I’m in control, I’m monitoring the situation, she’s happy and in control – so she doesn’t have to worry.

The second scenario where I use calm ice cream is about horses. The problem with horses is twofold: 1) many horses are comfortable with the dogs around them but they may be scared, 2) they might kick the dog, in which case I want to protect Maisie.

That’s why I use calm ice cream on horses. When I see the horse in the distance, I get Maisie’s attention, if necessary, I walk away and have Maaisie come to me. Again I grab his collar, pat his shoulder, and watch the horses pass—I tell him I’m in control, I’m happy, and he doesn’t have to worry.

Calm Ice Cream is a great tool and you should use it when your dog is excited. The Dog Listener technique has 4 pillars you need to learn: prey, food, situation and Danger. Calm freezing is a tool for dealing with the Danger the dog perceives. When you understand why a dog does what it does, you can influence the dog’s behavior.

The Dog Listener approach helps people understand how dogs behave.
